Return to Fly Fish the Green River

One of the stops on our relocation voyage from Littleton, CO to Gig Harbor, WA was a day on the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam in Utah. I had visited in 2012 with the Cutthroat Chapter of Trout Unlimited (see earlier post) but Shannon has never been.

We arrived on Sunday, May 4th and stayed at the pleasant Flaming Gorge Resort where the rooms are comfortable and the food is home cooked. We had arranged for a full-day float on the upper (A) section with a guide named Spencer. We dumped our stuff in the room, bought licenses and headed down to the Little Hole section of the river. Once the wind finally let up near dark, the fish were rising all over the place. Sadly, we were unable to fool any of them. We headed back to the resort for a late dinner of chicken-fried steak and potatoes. We were excited for our early start with the guide tomorrow.

The guide trip was fantastic! Shannon caught fish right off the bat. She had a great first half of the day pulling in good fish through every hole. I started off a little slower but had a better afternoon. We both ended up catching more than 20 fish, none of which were small. That’s one of the things I love about the Green River, most of the fish you catch are around 16 inches. That’s a big fish on most of the rivers we usually fish.
